Day 2: Manresa State Beach to Moss Landing

SIX-FOOT WAVES GREETED US the second day of hiking, and surfers joined the other sea creatures near the state beach access points. Schools of porpoises glided north just beyond the surf line. Harbor seals hunted offshore and stopped to stare at us walking on the long stretches of empty beaches between parks. They seemed to say, “We don’t see your strange species in these parts very often.” In the late fall, gray whales can be spotted migrating south, spouting far out to sea. They return in late winter and early spring for the journey north with their calves, this time much closer to shore.
